The Ratliff's had strange notions about naming their children. Whereas most families would carry on with family names, the Ratliff's would name their children after people they admired.

For a long time we have tried to figure out how Joshua Wilson Ratliff came by his name since there are no "Wilson" surnames or given names found in the lineage (to date). The best I can conclude is that Nathan Ratliff, Rev. War soldier, served under a Capt. Joshua Wilson. Perhaps it was through that connection that William Ratliff decided to name his 1st born son "Joshua Wilson" Ratliff. (Joshua went by just "Wilson" most of the time.)

Another strange name is that of Joshua's son, Count Zenzendorf. There are no Counts and no Zenzendorf's in the family line. Within the Moravian movement (100 yrs before Martin Luther) there was a great Bishop, Count Zinzendorf (1700-1760). (To read more about him: http://www.zinzendorf.com) It is plausible that Count was named for this Bishop, who had sent missionaries into Old Salem, North Carolina.

Joseph Tinney, the grandfather of Thomas Milton Tinney, Sr., was the son of:
John Henry Tinney, born 23 Feb 1844, Harrison County, Kentucky, USA, died 23 June 1885, Kelat, Harrison, Kentucky, USA; he was a Civil War Soldier on the side of the Union Army. John married, 05 Mar 1867 at Wm. Ratliff's house, Harrison County, Kentucky, as his only wife: Louisa Lawson. Louisa was born 13 Mar 1848, Berry, Harrison, Kentucky, USA; died 26 June 1930; daughter of Jeremiah Lawson and his wife, Nancy Toliver. The Lawson family has been published in: Our Family, by William Everett Lawson, (Kershaw, SC: By the Comp., November 1978). Also, William Lawson, A Scottish Rebel, by Bill Porter,
(Radford, VA: Commonwealth Press, Inc., 1983); subsequent newsletters, etc.
Jeremiah Lawson fought and died in the American Civil War, on the side of the North.
Cynthiana, Harrison County, Kentucky, was the scene of a severe battle during the War between the States. Jeremiah Lawson died on 17 July 1862, when General John H. Morgan, with about 800 men, captured the town, which was defended by a Federal force under Col. John J. Landrum. Much of the fighting was around the old covered bridge over the Licking River, but Jeremiah Lawson refused to give up. He died, as the last man, defending the old county courthouse.

My mother was the only child of Percy's first marriage to Emily Elizabeth Joplin (d/o Grover Cleveland Joplin & Sallie Bell). Percy's wife & children of the second marriage saw my mother as an inconvenient reminder of the prior marriage. I met my grandfather only once in my life, when I was 15. He had come to Crystal Beach, TX where my mother and step-father had rented a cabin for the week. When asked if he wanted a beer, he replied that if he drank 1, there wouldn't be enough in the tub to satisfy him. That was the first time my mother knew her father was an alcoholic. His drinking was probably a big factor in the divorce of his first marriage since my grandmother said he left her out on the farm while he went into town every night. Years later my mother, as a teenager, while visiting with her father in Goodlett, TX was shopping in the local grocery, owned by Mr. French Wrinkles, who was also the banker. He told my mother that he would rather have the handshake of Percy Ratliff than another man's signed contract.

The William Ratliff born Dec 18 1822 in Va and died Jan. 26, 1898 in Ky is the son of James Ratliff and Elizabeth Lawson. James is the son of Reuben Ratliff, Jr, the Rev. War Soldier, and Phebe Ratliff.

Reuben Ratliff is a brother to my 3rd great grandfather John Ratliff that married Charlotte White. And their parents were Ruben Ratliff [Sr.] and Frances --------never did find out what her maiden name was.

Ruben Sr. father was Samuel Ratliff. The above Phebe Ratliff was a daughter of Silas "Anselus" Ratliff and Elizabeth.

This Silas "Anselus" Ratliff is a cousin to Ruben Sr. Silas "Anselus" Ratliff father was Robert Ratliff and Mary Touchstone.

Robert Ratliff and Samuel Ratliff are brothers I do believe.

Now the Rev. War soldier Nathan Ratliff is a son of William Ratliff and Susanah, William is the brother to Silas "Anselus" Ratliff .

My mother was named for one of her grandfather's mules, Billie. Count loved his mules more than just about anything and would normally hand feed them. She remembers that he cried when he sold he them. They were about 40 yrs old and still had their teeth.

His Mothers parents came from Ireland...named Loyd-Came to U.S.A. and settled in N. Carolina His mothers name was Eleanor Jane Loyd. Dropsy caused her death. Don't know her age at death.

His father died during the war at home with Flux. His Father married 3 times.

his first wife only bore one child named William Riley Brock.

Edna Ester Jones Ratliff's Death Dream

About three days before her death, she dreamt the Lord came for her. In the dream, she asked Him, "Have I been a good girl?" The Lord replied, "No, but I want you anyway." In her dream she said, "OK but I have to have three days to take of some things. I need to write my Will and transfer some property and other things." When she woke the next morning, and having remembered the strange dream, she told her dream to her daughter-in-law, Lois, wife of Buck Ratliff. They laughed about it but Edna went ahead and made the preparations, taking care of her Will, etc. She passed away three days later.

# Percy Felder Ratlilff was named for a man who came to the farm looking for a job. He was hired and lived on the farm. He was such an excellent worker that Count & Edna named the new baby after him.

This information came from Percy's sister.
