Family Tales and Information

Contributed by Clyde Goen:
Why Icy Goen never married:
She was engaged to be married at one point.  Her fiance's light bulb burned out in his bathroom and he stood on the side of the tub to change it.  In those days, that kind of light hung by wires and operated by pull string.  The bath tubs were also cast iron.  Something went wrong and he was electrocuted. Story is that Icy never dated again.

W. R. Goen was one of the original founders of Bright Light Free Will Baptist Church:
Bright Light Free Will Baptist Church is still in operation and is now the oldest continuously open Free Will Baptist church in the state of Texas.

* Contributed by Clyde Goen, great-grandson of William & Nancy Pate Goen.

The photos came from the personal collection of Bessie A. Rhodes Wilkinson.  In my grandmother's notes she had the following: "Angie Lockhart Creel was the daughter of Nancy Pate (youngest sister of Frances Milbre Pate). Angie's father was son of Mrs. Lockhart Pate, the girls step-mother and Nancy's step-brother. Mrs. Lockhart Pate accused Nancy's brother Frank of fathering the child, in order to protect her son. CT ran Frank off. Frank never returned and is thought to have drowned in the Trinity River at Liberty. CT Pate later learned the truth and tried to find Frank to make amends but never did.CT gave Mr. Creel a mule to marry Angie."
Some of the genealogcial information came from my cousin, John Pate of DeRidder, LA  and from Mr. Charles McGee < chucklesluck@hotmail.com >

Also, thanks to Joel Pate for correcting information on Samuel Joseph Pate -1815 GA-1868 TX .
