According to family tradition, Alford Hankins is "Alford" and not
"Alfred", however, the marriage entries for both Louraney and Orpha have "Alfred". Since I doubt he had
much schooling, he probably didn't know how to spell his name and just accepted whatever the clerk put down. Who really

lived at Shop Springs & Tucker's Crossroads. Mr. Drake did include a section on Shop Springs:
SHOP SPRINGS,
a post hamlet, on the Sparta pike, seven miles south-east from Lebanon, was established in 1850, on the land of Thomas Waters,
who suggested the name upon application for the post office. It is pleasantly situated in the fertile and delightful valley
of Spring creek, in the midst of an excellent community, and has two stores, two blacksmith shops, one wagon shop, one cooper
shop, a wood carding factory, school house, two physicians, and about 75 inhabitants, of which not more than a dozen are colored.
