The following information has been excerpted from
as researched by Rhonda Smith for the Butler County AL GenWeb.

18th Alabama Infantry Regiment

  • Organized at Auburn, 4 Sept 1861, with men recruited from Butler, Coffee, Coosa, Covington, Jefferson, Pike, Shelby, and Tuscaloosa counties.
  • Engagements include: Corinth, Shiloh, Blackland, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Dalton-Atlanta Campaign, Jonesboro, Franklin, Spanish Fort.
  • It surrendered at Meridian, MS, 4 May 1865, with the military department. The army numbered 858 men in January 1861; it lost 20 k and 80 w at Shiloh, and 56% of the 527 engaged at Chickamauga. It had 209 casualties in Chattanooga and was reduced to 275 effectives in November 1864.

Carmon Frances Stephenson Fountain

OBIT - published in the Liberty Vindicator

Carmon Frances Fountain, 87, passed away Sat., Feb. 20, 2010, at her residence in Waco. Services were held at 2 p.m., Tues., Feb. 23 at OakCrest Funeral Home with burial at Oakwood Cemetery. Born on April 6, 1922, Carmon was born in Liberty, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Stephenson. She attended grade school in Dayton and then moved back to Liberty, graduating from Liberty High School in 1940. She then attended a business college in Beaumont. After college, she returned to work in the tax office in the Liberty courthouse.

On March 14, 1941, she married W. T. Fountain of Kountze, Texas. Carmon and W. T Fountain had four children: Hugh Thomas, Janet May, Mark William and Melba Frances. Carmon was a youth counselor at the United Methodist Church in Belton, Texas, for 18 years. She also worked for many years with the Women’s Society of Christian Service. In 1972, Carmon and W. T. moved to Waco and became active members of the Austin Avenue United Methodist Church.

Carmon is survived by her husband, W. T. Fountain; son, Mark Fountain of Golden, Colo.; and daughters Janet Kennedy of Glen Rose, Texas and Melba Kattner and husband, Rick, of Camano Island, Washington.

William T. "W.T." Fountain, 92, of Waco, passed away Friday, May 14, 2010, at his residence. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, May 17, at the OakCrest Funeral Home with the Rev. Chris Mesa officiating.Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Mr. Fountain was born Sept. 18, 1917, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Fountain of Kountze. W. T. graduated from Kountze High School in 1935. He attended Lamar University in Beaumont, and started working for an engineering firm. On March 14, 1941, he married Carmon Frances Stephenson of Liberty and they had four children. W. T. worked for the Army Corp of Engineers from 1943 to 1947. He joined the Air Force and served in the European Theatre of Operations in World War II. After returning from World War II, W.T. returned to work for the Army Corp of Engineers. In 1972, W. T. and Carmon moved to Waco, and became active members of the Austin Avenue United Methodist Church. W. T. retired in 1975 from Waco Dam and Reservoir. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carmon Fountain, Feb. 20, 2010. W.T. is survived by his son, Mark Fountain of Golden, Colo.; daughters, Janet Kennedy of Glen Rose and Melba Kattner and husband, Rick, of Camano Island, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. September 18, 1917 - May 14, 2010
