Photos of Pate family members and friends
My great-grandmother, Frances Milbre "Fanny" Pate Rhodes, was living
with a Mrs. Holmes in Warren, Tx for a time. She had moved there when she and the children, (my grandmother,
Bessie Agnes & brother Henry Howard, Jr.) left Ottawa, KS after the death of Henry Rhodes. Her husband
then, Albert Lindstrom was not someone she wanted to stay with and left him about 1914-15. The family traveled
in a covered wagon. "Mrs. Holmes lived in a house on a hill and her son, Oscar Holmes, is buried on that
hill." - Bessie Wilkinson
Mrs. Holmes introduced Fanny (who was seeking work) to the widow Mrs.
Belle Payne, who was seeking a housekeeper. Mrs. Payne's son, Marion, took a shine to Fannie's cooking and housekeeping
talents, according to my grandmother's story. After Fannie's divorce from Albert was final, William Marion Payne & Frances
Milbre Pate Rhodes Lindstrom were married.
Mrs. Payne was so angry that she went to Evadale to live
with her daughter, Sarah Cowart, telling my great grandmother, "I hired you to keep my house, NOT to marry my son!".
In 1910, while Fannie was in Oklahoma with Henry Rhodes, her future husband, Wm. Marion
Payne was living with his widowed mother and younger brother. Marion was working as a laborer at the planing mill.
I wonder if this was the planing mill at Olive?

From my grandmother's notes, about her step-father, William Marion Payne:
"Daddy Payne had an interest in a fig farm between Beaumont & Galveston but it went broke and he lost his money."
